Welcome to Corby
Often referred to as part of the ‘hidden England’ region, due to its relatively unspoiled countryside and delightful villages just waiting to be explored, Corby and has so much to offer visitors to this area of Northamptonshire for their UK short break. In and around this one time industrial town, you’ll enjoy everything from high speed thrills to outstanding stately homes and just about everything in between! Corby is well positioned for exploring too; it’s close to the A1 and is easily reached from London, the North of England and the West Midlands. With so many low cost flights to Birmingham, London Luton and Nottingham East Midlands Airports, all of which are within an hours, your short break in Corby, Northamptonshire has never been so affordable.
Things to do in and around Corby
If it is leisure that brings you to Corby, then you really will be spoilt for choice. For lovers of heritage there is certainly plenty to see in the area. Why not visit Rockingham Castle, this 1000 year old former Royal fortress has magnificently furnished rooms from several periods and is surrounded by 12 acres of blooming gardens. Exhibitions set out the castle’s fascinating history and there are often special events in the gardens during the summer! Or you could retrace Jane Eyre’s footsteps in the quaint Georgian town of Stamford, home to over 600 listed buildings including 5 medieval churches. Burghley House, a grand Elizabethan mansion with intricate detailing and stunning gardens is a definite must visit. Also in the area is Althorp House, with in its boundaries there is almost 500 years of Spencer family history and of course the final resting place of Diana, Princess of Wales. There are stunning gardens, one of Europe’s finest collections of furniture, art and ceramics too as well as the award winning exhibition, Diana: A Celebration. For fun days out with the family Wicksteed Family Theme Park is a good choice. Northamptonshire’s premier family theme park, it offers a whole host of rides and attractions, themed characters as well as entertainment throughout the day and night. Guests can even experience ‘behind the scenes’ at the park with the rather unique Rollercoaster & Park Ranger Experience Days! Rutland Water Wildlife & Nature Reserve is easily reached too. Sherwood Forest, home of the fabled Robin Hood and Rockingham Forest, a one time Royal hunting ground, are in the area also and make pleasant places for woodland walks. For speed demons Corby is just 4 miles from Rockingham Speedway, venue for British Touring Car Championships races. Here you can spectate while adrenaline filled drivers whiz round the circuit at incredible speeds, or perhaps you’d like to get behind the wheel with one of the thrilling Ferrari Driving Experiences on offer! Silverstone, home of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix each July, is around an hours drive of Corby.
Evenings out in Corby
Evenings out in Corby are relatively laid back affair consisting of good food, good wine and good company. There are a number of traditional English country pub style restaurants as well as a whole host of international restaurants dotted around the town with cuisine from all four corners of the globe. For more choice or a change of scenery the neighbouring town of Kettering offers further choice. The cities of Leicester and Northampton are within easy reach and as you would expect from a big city offers a livelier night out with a whole host of bars, eateries and entertainment options.
Shopping in Corby
Corby is not a huge shopping destination, although with a whole host of high street brand names, some designer stores and a number of small independent shops, you could find just about anything you’ll need. The large cities of Leicester and Northampton are within easy reach for those serious shopaholics! Of course the UK’s number one shopping destination, London, is within a little over an hours commute by train too.
Fascinating fact
The 1930’s saw a large number of people migrating from Scotland and Ireland to work in the town’s thriving iron and steel factory. To this day Corby still has a large number of citizens of Scottish and Irish descent.
