Brighton
Welcome to Brighton
Situated on the south coast around 90 minutes from London, the quintessentially British seaside city of Brighton is one of the UK’s most visited places. Full of charm, style and eccentricity, it offers a veritable feast of things to do, places to go and attractions to enjoy. From the unique Royal Pavilion to the Victorian Brighton Pier, and a whole host of things in between, Brighton's attractions are a mix of heritage, seaside fun and cultural experiences. Whatever time of year you visit there is sure to be something that you’ll want to see or do!
Things to do in and around Brighton
The question is where to start! Well the short answer has to be the beach, assuming the great British weather is on its best behaviour that is! All along the beachfront you’ll find loads of shops, cafés, sports and of course the beach itself is the perfect spot for a lazy day in the sun or a family picnic. The fantastic Brighton Pier is a great place to visit too with its fun attractions including a whole host of fairground rides plus a scary new ghost train ride coming in summer 2007. Brighton’s Sea Life centre, with its fantastic display of the undersea world, is a big attraction for families. Brighton Festival runs during May and is a great showcase of the arts. Brighton’s Royal Pavilion, perhaps one of Brighton’s most famous and certainly most unique attractions, combines Chinese and Indian style decoration with magnificent furnishings, prized treasures and ornate designs - certainly not to be missed! Brighton Marina, one of Europe’s largest, is a stunning waterfront development that offers so much more than just a place to park your boat – there are restaurants, bars, fishing opportunities, a casino, a cinema and ten pin bowling. If you want to escape the city the rolling South Downs are easily reached where you can enjoy a number of outdoor pursuits, such as walking and cycling.
Evenings out in Brighton
As soon as the sun goes down Brighton's nightlife gets going. From dusk to dawn, seven days a week, the city is alive with theatre goers, film enthusiasts, dancers, clubbers and party animals. Perhaps one night you’ll enjoy a visit to Theatre Royal Brighton or head to the trendy ‘Lanes’ area with its narrow winding streets and hip bars, another night you may decide to check out one of this seaside city’s coolest clubs or Brighton Marina.
Shopping in Brighton
The oldest part of the city, Brighton’s famous ‘Lanes’ are a collection of narrow, twisting streets which are a hive of independent retail activity with lots of unique jewellery, antique and other specialist shops. For a taste of high street shopping Brighton’s Churchill Square has over 80 stores under one glass domed roof. If bargain hunting is more your thing try the various antique and flea markets across the city.
Fascinating fact
Hitler allegedly ordered the Royal Pavilion not to be bombed during the war, he apparently loved it so much he planned to make it his own personal headquarters!
